Cleaning and dressing a wound

Cleaning and dressing a wound

The most important thing about cleaning and dressing wounds on children is to be gentle!  Otherwise, children won't come back and get them looked after again.

The general principle with wounds is to keep them clean and keep them covered.

You don't need soap to clean wounds - dabbing with a wet gauze or cloth will do the job.  Be careful not to wipe or it may pull away skin and hurt.

Dry wounds by dabbing with a dry gauze or cloth.

Make sure dressings are on securely with tape or something like hypafix, to make sure no bugs can get in.
